Meet Your Committees: OE Committee

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
Many clubs and committees are busy sorting through leadership applications at the moment. For all other students looking to join one of Greenwood’s many extracurricular opportunities, hopefully this Meet Your Committees series will give you a glimpse into being a leader here at Greenwood and the experiences our committees offer.

One such extracurricular opportunity next year is the newly created Sustainability and Stewardship Committee. This committee combines Greenwood’s pre-existing Environmental Committee and OE Committee to promote sustainable living, eco-friendly initiatives and land stewardship.

Learn a little more about the OE Committee, which may give some insight to how the Sustainability and Stewardship Committee will operate next year.

Will Evis ‘22 is the executive for the OE Committee. Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, the OE Committee has done a lot of work to keep the spirit of OE alive at Greenwood through initiatives such as trip reports and photo contests.

“I joined the OE committee because I wanted to take part in activities and initiatives that would focus on fun and participation for students, and the OE committee was perfect for this,” says Will. “Furthermore, the outdoors and outdoor education have been a big part of my life inside and outside of Greenwood so any involvement in the OE world is a positive for me.”

Being on the OE committee has given Will the opportunity to lead younger students, and that experience is quite rewarding. Will gains a new appreciation for being a leader from his responsibilities as an executive to lead meetings and activities. The role has been a huge learning experience for him. This added responsibility helps Will feel more connected with the school as he gets to interact with staff and students from all grades.

His time with the OE Committee has certainly shaped his interests going forward from Greenwood. After graduating, Will will continue seeking leadership opportunities in the outdoors. “Being the OE executive has made me, more than ever, want to lead trips of my own or help others grow.,” says Will.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
