Apprentice Teacher Program

Our apprentice teachers believe that all students can learn and grow and demonstrate a student-centred, technology-enabled approach to learning.

There’s no better way to refine teaching skills than through hands-on experience within a professional learning community.
The year-long Apprentice Teacher fellowship supports qualified teachers who have recently graduated from a teacher education program. Our apprentice teachers believe that all students can learn and grow, and they demonstrate a student-centred, technology-enabled approach to learning that focuses on impact. Apprentice teachers are enthusiastic, energetic and collaborative and are eager to embrace Greenwood’s progressive approach.

Working alongside an experienced teacher, apprentice teachers further develop:
  • Classroom management skills
  • Strategies that support personalized learning
  • Technology integration
  • Assessment strategies
  • Action research skills
Teachers in this program also gain confidence in their ability to facilitate learning experiences and create positive and productive learning environments.

Outside of the classroom, apprentice teachers enrich student life by participating in Greenwood’s Outdoor Education program, coaching athletics teams and supervising service learning and other co-curricular activities.
“The feedback from learners in the course is powerful! Testimonials speak to the competencies that are refined and enhanced through a Theory of Action focus with a supportive mentor coach, in a professional learning community.”

OISE Certificate Program

In partnership with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto, Greenwood delivers an OISE Continuing and Professional Learning (CPL) course connecting research in personalized learning to the Greenwood experience. This course is run out the Centre for Teaching and Learning; it's unique to Greenwood and earns successful participants the OISE CPL certificate Teacher Induction: Applying the Research to Designing and Delivering Impactful Learning.

Apprentice teachers meet weekly with Executive Director Mary Gauthier to discuss a topic connected to personalized learning (previous examples include the teen brain and learning, grouping students by readiness and relational teaching). At the end of the year, our apprentice teachers reflect on their own practice through an action research project that focusses on designing and implementing personalized learning.

“Applying the Research to Designing and Delivering Impactful Learning course is intended for teachers who are committed to enhancing teaching and learning and building global competencies in themselves and their students," says Evelyn Wilson, Associate Director Learning Solutions, PreK-12 at OISE. "The feedback from learners in the course is powerful! Testimonials speak to the competencies that are refined and enhanced through a Theory of Action focus with a supportive mentor coach, in a professional learning community.”
