Annual Giving at Greenwood

Allan Hardy, Principal
As we arrive at the end of the term, all of us at Greenwood have a lot to be thankful for – not least of which is the support and commitment of our parent body. This comes through in everything from the success of our recent WinterGreen celebration and Holiday Hampers, to parents volunteering on a weekly basis in support of our community service program, to you showing up to cheer on the Grizzlies.

I also want to thank those families that have already supported this year’s Annual Giving campaign. The response to date has been encouraging and the school hopes to exceed last year’s parent participation rate of 31 per cent.

Hopefully, you have received a call from one of our Annual Giving Grade Captains. Thanks for taking that call and for considering your participation. This year, there are three areas targeted by Annual Giving: our new Innovation Lab; the Greenwood Fund for discretionary spending or the Class of 2018 Fund, which supports financial assistance for current students.

Annual Giving is an important part of our school fundraising, as it gives parents an opportunity to direct their donation to areas not covered by tuition. Many of our current families have made Greenwood a giving priority throughout their time at the school.

Ann Elliot is one of these parents and has donated annually since her eldest daughter joined Greenwood in 2009. According to Ann, she gives to the school “as a bonus for a job well done and as a strong show of support for the future plans of the school.” She admires the school’s “forward looking culture,” how it has met the different learning needs of her daughters and its “fresh, intellectual approach, which is needed to raise a whole child.”

I hope you will consider making an end-of tax-year donation to our Annual Giving campaign. What’s most important isn’t how much you give – it’s that you give. Donations to the Innovation Lab and the Greenwood Fund can be made online or through the mail using the pledge card. Giving to the Class of 2018 Fund must be made by cheque payable to the Greenwood College School Foundation.

All gifts received before December 31, 2017 either online or postmarked will be eligible for a 2017 charitable tax receipt. If you wish to give through stock or security, please contact Jamie Lougheed directly at 416-545-5103 for assistance with this process.

In my remarks to students at Monday's Assembly, I congratulated them on their wonderful accomplishments this term. I would also like to express our sincere thanks to parents for all you do to support Greenwood. On behalf of the teachers and staff, we hope you and your children have a well-earned, restful, holiday season.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
