Ready for Business!

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
Our gym is often home to teams going head to head, but on April 26, the competition was of a different sort. Students in upper year business courses divided up into teams to take part in the Greenwood’s Spring Business Case Competition. 67 students from Grade 10-12 participated in the competition.

On the day, students were presented with a challenge: develop a plan for luxury jewelry retailer Birks to revitalize their brand and increase sales. Over the course of the day, students worked quickly to review the case study, run SWOT analyses, and decide on a plan of action. Then, they had to put together a presentation to propose their strategy to the special guest judges.

The teams came up with interesting and diverse ideas, including strategic celebrity endorsements, expansion into suitable foreign markets, new product lines, and rebranding to appeal to Millennial tastes.

The competition is demanding, but all teams were able to complete their presentations in time. The business case competition is in the same format as the types of contests that students may face in university. Plus, interested students will be well-prepared for the annual DECA Business Case Competition next year.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
