Grade 12 Law On Trial

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
Some Greenwood students took the stand at the Ontario Superior Court on May 17. In the Grade 12 Law class’s annual culminating assignment, the class took on the courtroom roles they have been learning about all year to deliberate on a case in front of real Ontario judges.

Students were each assigned a role in the trial of R v. Bann, a fictional case based on the facts of the Oscar Pistorius trial. They acted as lawyers for the crown and defense, witnesses, and court reporters. There were enough participating students to run two simultaneous trials in separate courtrooms, presided over by Justices Anne London-Weinstein and Fred Myers.

Dressed in barristers gowns, students played their roles based on their advance preparation, drawing on what they have learned in class throughout the year. Visiting parents watched the proceeding from the jury box. Based on the students’ performance, one trial led to a conviction, while in the next courtroom the defendant was acquitted.

Thank you to Justice London-Weinstein and Justice Myers for their participation in the proceedings. It was an excellent and engaging way for students to cement their in-class learning.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
