Nancy Lang Visits Grade 8 Artists to Discuss Tom Thomson

Nancy is the producer of the 2011 film West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson and the mother of Greenwood alumnus Daniel Martin (‘09).

Nancy joined the students to discuss the life and death of Thomson and her research for the film. Students engaged in discussion about Thomson's paintings and hypothesized about his death. Nancy captivated this group with stories about making the film including finding old photographs and listening to people's stories.

This year, the Grade 8 artists have paddled Canoe Lake on a Thomson adventure and visited the McMichael Gallery and the Group of 7 gravesite, and they have now had the pleasure of speaking with Nancy Lang. These young artists should be quite knowledgeable on the topic of Tom Thomson and the Group of 7.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
