Getting Accepted to SHAD

Melissa St Amant, Communications Officer
SHAD is an award-winning enrichment program that empowers exceptional high school students to recognize their own capabilities and envision their extraordinary potential as tomorrow’s leaders and change makers.

Maya will live on a university campus for one monthwhere she will be immersed in lectures, workshops, projects and activities. She will listen to top university professors, business leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators and compete in a Design Entrepreneurship Challenge. Maya will be presented with a problem that has both economic and social implications and will have to design a product or service to solve it. Every year the theme of the challenge changes, making it new and exciting for upcoming SHAD participants.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Maya and ask her questions about her experience applying to SHAD and what she is looking forward to in the program.

What inspired you apply to SHAD?
“I had the opportunity to go to my cousin’s banquet at SHAD. I immediately loved it and thought it would be a very cool opportunity. I knew how much my cousin enjoyed it which really inspired me to apply.”

Can you describe the application process?
“There were a lot of forms that had several components including academics, extracurricular activities, volunteer work and creativity. They look for people who are leaders in their schools and are heavily involved in groups such as arts, athletics and so on. I enjoy being involved at Greenwood, especially in athletics, and now I can’t wait to be involved at SHAD.”

What are you looking forward to most being in SHAD?
“I am excited to work on the projects, meet new people, experience life on campus and be involved in everything SHAD has to offer. Everything about the program is exciting!”

Is there a certain campus you’re hoping to get?
“I really hope to get into the University of British Columbia. It’s my number one choice of school.”

Are you hoping for a certain theme for the Design Entrepreneurship Challenge?
“I’m hoping to get a science-based challenge because its a topic I enjoy. Science is one of my favourite subjects, along with business and math.”

Do you have aspirations towards being an entrepreneur?
“Yes. I really want to get involved in business. I hope to pursue my post-secondary education at the University of British Columbia and major in Commerce.”

What do you hope to learn at SHAD?
“I am excited to learn how to apply my knowledge to real-world things and learn what it takes to become a successful entrepreneur.”

Many SHAD alumni have gone on to win scholarships and awards and become successful entrepreneurs. Maya is excited to become part of the SHAD network and bring her creativity and knowledge to the program. We wish Maya all the best with her experience in SHAD!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
