Owen Gormely '23 to Compete in the South American Sailing Championships

Best of luck to Owen Gormely ‘23 who will attend the 2019 Optimist South American Championships in Algarrobo Bay, Chile next week!

Over the course of two and a half weeks, Owen will compete with more than 160 young athletes from over 17 countries. He will sail his own boat along with five others who will also represent Canada. Owen has been sailing since he was seven years old and says he has always had a passion for it.

Greenwood alumnus Tom Ramshaw ‘09, who recently won 2018 Rolex Canadian Sailor of the Year, grew up sailing at the yacht club where Owen is currently a member. Tom ranked 21st at the 2016 Rio Olympics and has now qualified to take part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Tom recently came to one of Owen’s practices to give a talk to the club members about his experiences competing and how important it is to set goals. Owen said he looks up to Tom and is inspired by his hard work and dedication to the sport. When asking Owen how he was feeling about this regatta he said that he is not nervous at all, just very excited for the competition to start!

Owen’s current goal is to qualify for more international events this year and next. Good luck, Owen - Greenwood is cheering you on!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
