Welcome to Bjorn Laboratories

Bjorn Farah ‘23 welcomes you to “Bjorn Laboratories”, a place where innovation and creativity comes to life.

It’s not often that you hear of a Grade 8 student designing and building a robot entirely on their own. Bjorn Farah spends his free time on weekends perfecting his creations and has made a video called “Bjorn Laboratories” that introduces his robotic arm and the process of making it. Just to prove how dedicated and passionate he is, Bjorn used all his Christmas and birthday money to buy every part he needed.

The process of building this arm may have been complicated, but for Bjorn it was a fun and exciting activity. Bjorn built the arm by using an electric car pump that he modified to work with his device. He connected air tubes to pneumatic cylinders; he also connected electronic valves at gates between air tubes. The cylinders control air flow which extends and retracts pistons. He then rewired relays and transistors from a breadboard to an Arduino microcomputer and coded the entire system so that he could control the arm remotely from his laptop. He built the frame of the arm using pieces of wood, hinges and electrical tape.

His skills and commitment to taking on a complex project on his spare time areinspiring. Bjorn’s ability to think innovatively is a great demonstration of intellectual character. Way to go Bjorn!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
