Helping Kids Build a Personal Library

We all know the saying “Reading is Fundamental”, but many of us take our access to books for granted. Home libraries are so important for children as they build their literacy skills; having even a few books to call their own makes a big impact.

In September, the Greenwood community came together to donate over 1,400 books as part of a book drive. The goal of this drive was to collect books for a spring book fair at Nelson Mandela Park Public School and Sprucecourt Public School.

Ms. Swain and student volunteers organized and curated the book fair at both schools over the course of two weeks. Grade 7 and 8 students set the books up around the school so their Reading Buddies could pick out two books to add to their personal libraries. Once they choose their books, they spent the morning reading together and talking about their favourite books.

“Helping children discover a love of literature is an incredible privilege,” said Ms. Swain.

Our students also visited two local bookstores, Mabel’s Fables and A Different Booklist, to augment the donations with additional titles reflecting the diversity of our partner schools. Thanks to our community’s generosity, Greenwood gave away close to 2,000 titles!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
