Flooded With Talent During Our Annual Arts Week

Creativity takes courage - Henri Matisse

To start off our annual Arts Week, we welcomed JUNO-nominated singer-songwriter and storyteller Peter Katz on Monday, May 13. Peter gave an inspiring performance that encouraged Greenwood students to embrace discomfort and chase after their dreams. He told stories about his journey to becoming a musician and expressed that being vulnerable can lead to many great opportunities. You can read more about Peter’s message here.

On the evening of Tuesday, May 14, students arrived at school for what would be an exciting night: our 10th annual Groscars! This event celebrated 10 years of film studies being offered at Greenwood and showcased film pieces created by 50 of our students. As guests arrived they enjoyed walking down the ‘Green Carpet’ and posing for pictures before taking in the show.

Hosted by Luke Farwell and Brenna Moore, the Groscars featured a range of documentaries, a TV pilot and an advertising reel. Students worked tirelessly throughout the year putting their film pieces together and it paid off when they saw all the smiles from the audience. It was a packed house, and the event was a wonderful way to show off the talent of our film students.

Later in the week, our main floor and theatre were flooded with colours, performances and music to celebrate our Spring Arts Showcase, Arts Everywhere! On the evening of Thursday, May 16, students had both visual and media art exhibits on display and our guests enjoyed talking to the artists about their work. Grade 12 Visual Arts students mounted “mini-shows” near the reception area to show off their portfolios from the year.

We also had performances from our music classes, the dance team and the Grade 7 and 10 Drama class in our theatre. To top it all off, there was a photobooth set up by our photography class and an open mic in the hallway for anyone to show off their singing talent.

Both the Groscars and the Spring Arts Showcase were a huge success! It was a great week of showing off the talent and creativity of our students.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
