Improving Student Learning Through the Greenwood Summer Institute

Over twenty teachers worked together during our annual Summer Institute held from June 24-28.

Run by Heather Thomas, Vice Principal, Student Learning, and Mary Gauthier, Executive Director, Greenwood Centre for Teaching and Learning, the Summer Institute is a great opportunity for teachers to further refine and develop courses in a variety of ways. With an overarching focus on student learning, teachers looked at personalized and self-paced learning tools, co-teaching practices, and much more.

Gathering in small groups, they worked together to facilitate new ways to support our students’ ability to personalize their learning.

The six key areas of focus were:

Planning units and lessons with literacy and differentiation in mind
Refining Grade 11 Functions in a way that works well in a co-teaching environment
Refining art courses by looking at the needs for a full year-course versus a semestered course
Developing resources to enhance our diversity programming
Refining Civics lessons, units, and assessments to be better facilitated through a one lesson/week model
Creating blended-learning resources to support the ability to offer co-op to more students

These projects allowed teachers to strengthen their existing education model as well as further their professional development.
