Pride Week at Greenwood

Written by Abbey Holmen ‘21
Greenwood's annual celebration of Pride Week took place from October 21-25.

To kick off our Pride Week we welcomed Harrison Browne, a retired professional from the National Women's Hockey League, to speak to Greenwood about Pride and his experiences coming out as the first transgender athlete in North American professional hockey. Harrison spoke to students about the importance of inclusivity and acceptance. We certainly learned valuable lessons about the impact we can have on those around us and how important it is to be an ally.

Throughout the week we also ran various activities to make Greenwood a more inclusive place. The Diversity committee planned initiatives such as rainbow nail painting and bracelet making and put on a screening of the hit movie Love, Simon. As well, the Arts committee designed a Love is Love mural with signatures of students pledging to be allies, and Jack Chapter ran an activity about mental health in the LGBTQ+ community. On Friday there was a Pride-themed dress down and we collected donations for The 519, which is an organization that provides educational resources, training and crisis intervention for LGBTQ+ individuals in our city.

Pride Week at Greenwood was jam-packed with great workshops and initiatives. The Diversity committee hopes that we helped make Greenwood a more inclusive place, and we are focused on making sure next year is even better!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
