Greenwood’s building expansion was recently certified Gold through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, a green building certification program used around the world. Gold is the second-highest rating available through LEED.
Through the certification process, LEED projects earn points across several categories including Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources and Innovation. Based on the number of points achieved, a project then earns one of four LEED rating levels: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum.
When we planned our building expansion several years ago, minimizing our environmental impact was a top priority. Sustainable features of the expanded facility include:
A green roof, which helps to reduce the urban heat island effect
Selection of low-emitting materials for flooring, wood, paint and adhesives
Water-efficient landscaping
Optimized energy performance
These considerations help to ensure that Greenwood’s expanded building was designed to be sustainable and make a minimal impact on the environment. Our expansion is energy- and water-efficient, constructed from regional and recycled materials and mindful of the surrounding habitat.
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
