Life After Greenwood: Careers Morning

Banking, medicine, broadcasting, engineering, and mental health services were just some of the career paths our Grade 9-12 students learned about at our annual Careers Morning!

On Tuesday, February 4 we welcomed Greenwood alumni and parents who work in a variety of fields to talk to Grade 9-12 students about their jobs and how they got to where they are today. They chatted about their postsecondary education choices and the skills they acquired to move forward in their industries.

Every speaker left the students with valuable insight into what life could be like after Greenwood. It was a great opportunity for our students to learn about potential career options and to understand that it can take a lot of hard work, dedication and passion to achieve their career goals.

Read some notable quotes from our guest speakers below.

Madeleine Dalkie ‘09 (Not-For-Profit Organizations)
Development Associate, Corporate Partnerships Art Gallery of Ontario
“Confidence is important in my job, and that’s something I had to work on. One way I built my confidence was writing down ‘wins’ at the end of every day, whether large or small.”

Gill Roberts ‘06 (Event Management and Public Relations)
Founder, Gillian Roberts & Co
“Things start to fall into place if you work really hard and people have good things to say about you. You have to give it your all.”

Graeme Duff ‘12 (Banking)
Investment Banking Associate, Morgan Stanley
“I don’t think there’s a better place to start your career than investment banking. I’ve heard people say it’s like ‘drinking from a fire hose’ - there’s such a high volume of learning that goes on.”

Farah Perelmuter (Entrepreneurship)
Founder, Speakers’ Spotlight
“Being passionate and displaying that passion can show people how confident you are which is what employers love to see.”

Trevor Weir ‘08 (Engineering)
Process Engineer, Ausenco
“Travelling to different parts of the world for work allows you to see that there are other ways things can be done. Travelling really changed my perspective on life and has taught me not to take the opportunities I have in Canada for granted.”

Daniel Martin ‘09 (Mental Health Services)
2SLGBTQ+ Counsellor, Associated Youth Services of Peel
“My job is to make people feel better about themselves. To me, that seems like a pretty good way to spend my time. There is a surprising amount of laughter in my sessions. That lightness can make the difficult topics easier to deal with.”

Jamie Egan ‘12 (Sales)
Account Executive, TouchBistro
“Pursue a career that is a strength or an interest, or ideally both.”

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
