The Gold Key

Angela Yang started drawing when she was in Grade 5, but her passion for Art really began while she was in high school. Currently, Angela is in Grade 11 but is taking a Grade 12 Visual Arts course.

“I am exposed to many different mediums and materials of art and challenge myself through each project in school,” says Angela. During the holidays, Angela usually attends art portfolio preparation classes in the United States. She is also on the Arts Committee at Greenwood and is a member of the school Jazz Band. “If there are any opportunities at the school relating to arts, I always seek to get involved,” she says.

Recently, Angela submitted her art pieces to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. The Awards give students opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Scholastic allows you to submit any type of artwork and encourages creativity and personal flair. Angela was inspired to submit her art because she had completed many pieces over the summer and thought it would be a great addition to her university application if she won any of the awards.

Angela received the Gold Key award for her creative piece called ‘Running on the Corn’. She used shapes of corn as pixel art to create a horse on the corn so it looks like it is running through the surface. The Gold Key is awarded to the very best works that are submitted and winners are automatically considered for national-level recognition.

Angela also received two honourable mentions: one for a self-portrait piece and another for an interior design piece. Her self-portrait piece was inspired by a project she was completing in her Grade 12 Visual Art class at Greenwood. This class was tasked with choosing a specific theme and each student is now completing a year-long art project based on that theme.

“I chose ‘difference’ as my theme. My portrait is a pencil crayon drawing that illustrates cultural differences in my daily life,” said Angela. “It is a view of me doing laundry but there are two fabric patterns in the wash: one being my Greenwood uniform and the other being a Chinese cloth. It represents both Western and Eastern cultures that are part of my daily life.”

Once Angela graduates from Greenwood, she plans on studying Architectural Design. Her talent and dedication will take her far in life and Greenwood is so proud of all that she is accomplishing. Way to go Angela!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
