Read about what the Athletics Committee has been up to!

The Athletics Committee at Greenwood is a group of students that come together every week to review and support the athletic programs that are running each season. This includes finding scorekeepers for our Home games or brainstorming new athletic swag.

We also look for ways to set athletic initiatives to involve the whole Greenwood community and complement the work of other student leadership committees. For example, during Pride Week, we acknowledged LGBTQ+ athletes who have made an impact around the world in sport in partnership with the Diversity Committee. We also welcomed Harrison Browne, the first transgender athlete in North American professional sports. Read more about Harrison’s visit here.

Similarly, during the Week of Reconciliatory Action, the Athletics Committee researched and presented about athletes and traditional sports in Indigenous communities and their impact.

Finally, during Mental Health Awareness Week, we worked with the Jack Chapter team to run a dodgeball game during community time. This was a good way to show the positive effects physical activity can have on our mental health.

One last exhilarating competition that the Athletics Committee runs on a regular basis is a student vs. staff athletics series. Once a term, Greenwood staff and students play a sport of our choosing to fight for a ‘dress down’ as the prize. This is a great way for students to interact with staff in a non-formal setting and really build student-teacher connections through athletics.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
