Are you the Greenest at Greenwood?

Written by Bella Clyde ‘21 and Ms. Della Mora
The Environmental Committee extends Greenwood’s love for nature beyond Outdoor Education by actively working to reduce Greenwood’s environmental footprint. They meet weekly to discuss ideas, fundraisers, events and next steps towards sustainability.

This year, the committee implemented the Greenest @ Greenwood monthly competition. Once a month, this award is bestowed to a student or staff member who demonstrates care for the environment by consistently participating in environmental initiatives. The Environmental Committee tries to create one initiative per week for students and staff to partake in. One example is Meatless Monday, where students are encouraged to bring a vegetarian lunch or buy a delicious meatless meal from the café. Another initiative is Thirsty Thursday, where students are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles, mugs, or tumblers to school in order to ditch disposables often associated with beverages.

The Greenest @ Greenwood winner is not only awarded bragging rights, but also a 4Ocean bracelet which is made from recycled bottles. Every bracelet purchased removes one pound of plastic from the ocean. This bracelet is a symbol of the winner’s commitment to the environment and a reminder of our need to limit the use of single-use products.

The Environmental Committee is excited to continue the Greenest @ Greenwood momentum by recognizing the student or staff member who participates most in Greenwood’s Virtual 2020 Earth Week kicking off Monday, April 20!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
