Learn About our Virtual House System!

Written by: Charlotte Dixon ‘20
When we realized we would not be coming back to school anytime soon, the House captains were disappointed that we could not finish the year strong. Personally, I was quite saddened we could not run one of my favorite days of the school year: Spirit day. However, the House executive team, House captains, and Greenwood staff have been working hard to keep the spirit of the House system alive.

Our team still meets every Monday at lunch as we normally do during the year. This gives us an opportunity to discuss upcoming plans. These constant meetings keep us united during this time. Already, we have engaged our fellow Houses in many virtual events such as “Greenwood’s Got Talent” where students sent in a talent video or skill they picked up during quarantine. During Greenwood's annual Earth Week, we collected photos of students with disposable water bottles, straws, and other sustainable items for an opportunity to win House points. We also had Women's Week where a female scientist needed to be identified based on clues each day. These clues were sent out and the correct answer equalled one point for that House.

These events, and more to come, help keep friendly competition and spirit alive at Greenwood! Now more than ever, these opportunities to connect with each other are critical. As House captains, we make sure to keep in touch with our House as much as possible and create fun, entertaining videos for assembly allowing everyone to be engaged. The House system has always been a major part of Greenwood’s community, and we are excited that it still has a crucial presence. The continuation of House activities during the COVID-19 pandemic shows how strong, enthusiastic and hard-working our team is.

We are looking forward to many more fun and spirited online activities from the House team. Our community can be assured that lots of hard work will go into these events from all our House captains and staff as the race for the House Cup comes to a close!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
