Greenwood’s Pride Week 2020

Written by Stanca Radulescu ‘21
In the wake of the surge of events of the past months, Greenwood has stepped up their work on Diversity this year. The Diversity committee, run by exec Jill Fabian ‘21 and Ms. Glick, considers several factors from students throughout the school as well as staff to enhance Greenwood’s diversity, equity and inclusion.

This week marks Greenwood’s annual Pride Week and will consist of several initiatives to help engage students and staff in reflection about Greenwood’s plan to make our school community more inclusive, aware, and accepting.

This week, the focus is on opening up conversation and increasing student awareness of the work that our school must and will continue. On Monday, Grade 7 to 9 students participated in an Inclusivity workshop with Get REAL, which is an organization that has been working with our school for a couple of years. This is a great and essential step in broadening the perspectives of the younger students.

On Tuesday, the Grade 10-12s participated in an Anti-Racism workshop. Additionally, LGBTQ+ athlete quizzes will be posted on the screens this week by the Athletic Committee, and a House Competition Kahoot will take place on Thursday at all grade lunchtimes. Finally, on Friday, the Arts Committee will host the first Greenwood Mic of the year.

The Diversity Committee has been working hard to develop new initiatives to increase student engagement on diversity. Students can now provide their feedback on what Greenwood can do to improve our outlook on diversity; moreover, students and staff find a link to “Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Student Resources” on the ON platform. These resources are available year-round, and students can contribute resources that they might find helpful.

Pride Week 2020 will help to sustain essential conversation and awareness among our community, to share and provide resources, and to help Greenwood students and staff members acknowledge and uplift silenced voices, become more inclusive and open-minded, and show our school’s support for the LGBTQ+ community.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
