Honouring Remembrance Day

On Remembrance Day, we honour those who have served and continue to serve our country. We acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those touched by war and our responsibility to work for the peace they worked hard to achieve.

On November 11, the Greenwood community watched a special presentation that included moving stories and musical performances. After playing the National Anthem, the Greenwood choir performed a beautiful rendition of “Long Time Traveller” by the Wailin’ Jennys. Our Heads of Student Leadership, Liv Arbess ‘21 and Stewie Bain ‘21, as well as Ms. Bruce, spoke about the importance of Remembrance Day and our responsibility to reflect on the sacrifices people have endured in order to better our country. We also heard from Dani Bauer ‘21 who recitedIn Flanders Fields and from Ryan Flux ‘21 who performed The Last Post and the Rouse.

In remembering those who have served and continue to serve for our country, not all stories have been told. During this presentation, we watched videos that highlighted the experiences of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ soldiers. We also created a padlet to highlight the contributions of Canadians with a wide range of identities.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
