A Different Way of Getting Our Theatre Fix!

Written by Evan Edgell ‘24
Typically, Greenwood would have a Grade 7-9 musical and a Grade 9-12 play but this year, we are doing an online play series. This means that every grade has their own play and teacher director. Although I’m a little disappointed to be missing my final year to take part in the junior musical, this is an awesome alternative and I’ve really enjoyed it so far.

I’m in the Grade 9 play: Battle in the Band written by our director, Ms. Borden. It’s about a group of high school students during COVID-19 times who decide to form a band in an attempt to win a province-wide virtual Battle of the Bands competition. I play a character named Ian, who along with his lifelong friend Andy, and their friend Bri, leads the band. Throughout their journey they must navigate social hierarchies, prize money dilemmas, and personality conflicts. I enjoy playing Ian because he is a very collected yet confident character and he likes to joke around. It has also been a learning experience for me as this is the largest role I’ve ever been cast in.

The majority of rehearsals have been online with the exception of some in-person rehearsals that took place before the Winter Break. We rehearse two to three days a week for about an hour after school. During this time we alternate between running lines, running scenes, laughing, and chatting. It’s always a fun time and it’s exciting to know that we will eventually get to perform (virtually) for other students, staff and parents in the Greenwood community. I am also grateful to interact with some students with whom I have no classes since this year we tend not to see anyone unless we have a class with them.

The show will run on February 18 and February 19 at 7:30 p.m. and we will perform live, back-to-back, with the Grade 10 play. Don’t miss your chance to get your free tickets and watch from home; it’s going to be a fantastic show and I promise you won’t regret it!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
