Raising Spirits at Greenwood

Spirits were at an all-time high last week as the Greenwood community celebrated our annual Spirit Week in the school building! It was an exciting week, especially after many weeks of virtual activities.

Throughout the week, students and staff competed against each other in a number of initiatives in order to win the championship title for Spirit Week 2021. Some of the daily activities included trivia on the morning announcements, Kahoot! competitions, a selfie station in the Lodge showing off different dress-down themes and a March Madness Badminton Bracket.

There were also a number of week-long initiatives including our Walk to School Days, a hunt to find our Grizzly Mascot, a QR code scavenger hunt and an ‘International Women’s Day: Guess that Staff Member’ board. This mystery staff board was set up at Reception, showcasing some of the incredible women from the Greenwood community in childhood photos. Students had to match the photos to staff members to earn spirit points.

To wrap up an incredible week, our students and staff also competed in our yearly Lip Sync tradition. Every grade did an incredible job on their lip sync video, but Greenwood staff and the Grade 12s managed to tie for first place.

After an incredible week filled with strong participation and a lot of Greenwood Spirit, our Grade 12s took the win as Spirit Week champions!

Hear what our students have to say about Spirit Week below:

“On behalf of the Grade 8s, we all really enjoyed the QR code scavenger hunt that happened throughout the whole week. It was a great way for people to explore the school and have fun with friends.”

“We enjoyed the trivia. It was awesome to look forward to seeing if we got the questions right each day and letting our brains work and find the answers.”

“I’m really proud of how my grade came together to create a fantastic lip sync. The lip syncs were a major high point of Spirit Week as all of them were some of the best lip syncs Greenwood has ever seen.”

“Whether it was the lip syncs or the Kahoot! challenges, the Grade 12s really came together as one and put our best foot forward towards our final Spirit Week together. It was such an amazing experience and I am very happy with the outcome. We took the win!!!”

“It was great to see some friendly competition between the grades. The energy in the building was so much fun all week, I could even feel it travel to my home on remote days! Woohoo!”

“I thought it was a great way to get some energy into the student body during these difficult times of split grades and online learning.”

“For the first time in a while, it felt alive in the building. I think people made the most of the different fun activities and it made for a strong sense of connection and community throughout the week.”

“The energy in the classes while watching the lip syncs was a great way for Greenwood to come together.”

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
