Venturing Further With Greenwood‘s Theatre Program

Written by Kylie Armstrong ‘25
How was my experience as an actor in the Grade 8 play you ask? Where do I start?

I signed up in November wanting to get more involved at school and learn more about acting. I also can’t sing, so the fact that it was a play rather than a musical made it all the more appealing! Little did I know that I was going to love what was coming up in this play.

Throughout the pandemic and being divided into a cohort, different friend groups formed which caused me to drift away from a lot of the people in my grade. However, being involved in this play reconnected so many of my friendships and allowed me to gain that social aspect I was lacking in my life.

Being an actor in the play was awesome! I loved getting into character with my friends but my favourite part was the finale. Every time we practiced for the finale, I couldn't wait to get in the theatre. Dancing, laughing and doing gymnastics for 2 hours filled my body with serotonin. From running through online rehearsals, to in-person practices (before the school closure), I have learned how to adapt to my environments. I have also learned how to manage my time. We had a lot of rehearsals which required me to plan my days out to make sure I could fit everything in.

I totally recommend doing any Greenwood performances as they are amazing learning opportunities and create such special communities. Seeing Ms. Webster managing the responsibilities of an entire play has inspired me to believe that anyone can venture further if they put their mind to it!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
