Finding Success on Ice

For Piper Grober ‘23, hockey has been a major part of her life since she was 4 years old. Now 16, Piper plays hockey in the Ontario provincial league with the Durham West Junior Lightning as well as Greenwood’s own Senior Girls’ hockey team. 

As with many sports, COVID had a major impact on the regular ice hockey season but fortunately with improved COVID-19 situations across the province, Piper has been able to play hockey again with some degree of normalcy. In fact, she was invited in September to play for Team Ontario Blue in the Central Canada Challenge at Nottawasaga Resort. Typically, this would have been a national tournament with many provincial teams participating in one tournament but due to COVID-19 measures, the tournament was limited to Ontario’s Red and Blue Teams and a team from Quebec.

Amongst her teammates on Ontario Blue, Piper is one of a few players born in 2005. Most of Team Ontario are a year older than her, but that fact didn’t stop her from making a great impression during the tournament. Recently, Piper was invited to attend the selection camp for Canada’s U18 National Women’s Team due to her performance during the Central Canada Challenge in addition to league play. This U18 selection camp will take place at the end of December; if selected, Piper will have the opportunity to play for Canada in the 2022 IIHF World Women’s U18 Championship happening in Sweden.

Even off the ice, Piper is driven to reach her goals. Cornell University is where Piper sees herself next and she is committed to attending once she graduates from Greenwood. Both on and off the ice, we wish Piper good luck on her journey!

*Update on January 21, 2022: We're pleased to announce that Piper has been selected to be a part of Canada's National Women's Under-18 Hockey Team. While the IIHF tournament scheduled to take place in Sweden was cancelled due to COVID-19, we're certain Piper will have other opportunities in the future to represent Canada. Congratulations Piper!

**Update on June 1, 2022: We're pleased to announce that the IIHF U18 Women's World Championships will proceed in Wisconsin, USA. Piper Grober '23 has been selected to play Canada's national team. Games begin on June 6 and broadcasted on TSN. Way to go Piper!
