Next Year's Heads of Student Leadership

Today, the Greenwood community elected our Heads of Student Leadership for the 2022-2023 school year: congratulations to Ellie Deegan and Curtis Li! An astonishing 12 candidates ran for these two positions. As announced last year, these positions are no longer gendered; Ellie and Curtis are the two candidates who came out at the top of today’s ranked ballot.

I’m very proud of these students for putting themselves forward and for the effort they put into their campaigns. Running for the headship means much more than simply delivering a speech. Our candidates prepared posters, took part in several meet-and-greets and explained to members of our community why they feel they would succeed in the role - it takes commitment! The candidates are a great group of students with a range of skills and attributes, and I know that Ellie and Curtis will bring their unique styles to the school as leaders and role models come September.

Hopefully, next year’s Heads will come into an environment that looks much closer to “normal” than the last couple of years have. Leading during a pandemic is tough -- uncertainty adds a new level of complexity to an already challenging job, requiring frequent pivots and rethinking of past initiatives. That’s why I am especially impressed with the work our current Heads of Student Leadership, Charlie Baillie and Kristina Désormeaux, have done this year. They have played a critical role in motivating and encouraging students over the last many months, and their optimism and positive energy have had a powerful ripple effect on our community. I want to commend Charlie and Kristina for their work, and to thank the staff members who have supported and guided them in their roles.

At last week’s Staff Wellness session, we discussed how we can all “fill our cups”, replenishing our mental, physical and emotional energy. One very effective strategy is to put events on your calendar, even something as small as going for a walk - having concrete evidence of something to look forward to provides an instant mood boost. As we approach the end of the school year, the Greenwood calendar is filling up with Grad Receptions, the Spring Formal, June Outdoor Education and much more. It’s heartening to see the return of these long-anticipated events, and I hope it’s filling our students’ cups as much as mine.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
