May the 4th Be With You

First off: May the 4th be with you! Yes, I am a Star Wars fan. These fun facts about people are the types of things that we learn about each other through unscheduled, impromptu personal interactions and in-person conversations. Great news: these moments are making a comeback!

Students learned some of these interesting things about one another during “get to know you BINGO” last night, when we hosted our incoming Grade 9 students and their families at Greenwood! It was their first visit to our building, as their Admissions process has been entirely virtual; it was wonderful to see these students and their parents and guardians in 3D. Our students, staff and parent ambassadors were excited to show off the school and welcome our newest members to the community.

Recently, we hosted a reception for Class of 2020 alumni and their families. This was the first chance these grads had to be in the school since March 2020. We will also host the Class of 2021, another group that had a shortage of opportunities for celebration in their graduation year, later this month. We have all had few opportunities to get together in person over the past couple of years; our social skills may be a little rusty and the 2019 event wardrobe may fit a little differently, but the effect of in-person events is a little bit magical! They are invigorating and enhance our sense of community and belonging.

On May 5, we welcome our Class of 2028 to the building. These students are currently in Grade 6. I know that they will bring a great level of energy and new perspectives to tomorrow’s event and to our community in September. Like every other year, 2028 will be here before you know it. Let’s savour the days and the moments -- being truly present and in the moment can be a big boost to mental health. I’m not spending too much time looking back at 2020-21. There are lessons to be learned for sure, but I am ready to move forward, rebuild and reimagine.

I wish you many moments of being in the moment, and I look forward to seeing more of you in 3D in the near future.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
