An In-Person Welcome to Greenwood

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
New students and families entering Greenwood’s community were invited to attend our in-person orientation sessions on May 3 and 5. The newest members of our tight-knit community were greeted at the doors by our student ambassadors who held open doors and operated the guest coat check. Afterwards, the new students checked in with their family members and looked for their name tags which also revealed their Greenwood House.

After some mingling, Principal Ms. Bruce and Admissions Officer Ms. Campbell-Rogers invited students to sit at their assigned House tables before starting their opening remarks. In each of their addresses, Ms. Bruce and Ms. Campbell-Rogers expressed their excitement to see and greet each of our new Greenwood community members face to face. The families of our new students began their tours around the building while the students participated in fun activities.

Students participated in a drama exercise in Greenwood’s theatre, played games in our gym, took pictures with our mascot Grizzly and made scientific discoveries. Parents and guardians got to see Greenwood’s facilities and learn more about the programming and extracurriculars available to their students. These in-person tours and activities served to give a sense of what classes and the school environment are like for our incoming Grade 7s and Grade 9s that cannot be truly replicated through virtual sessions.

Capping off the night, students engaged in a fierce (but friendly) House competition with a Kahoot! quiz. Congratulations to House Nahanni who won on the Grade 9 orientation night and to House West who won on the Grade 7 orientation night.

We sincerely hope that those who attended the orientations made some new connections and are as excited for September as we are. Thank you to the staff and to the current Greenwood student and parent/guardian ambassadors who volunteered and made each night a success!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
