Tour for Humanity Comes to Greenwood

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
All aboard! Next stop, learning. For two days, the Tour for Humanity interactive learning bus visited Greenwood and led students through its Canadian Experience workshop. This mobile classroom is an ongoing initiative from the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre and travels across Ontario (and beyond) to promote tolerance by examining history.

In this fully self-contained classroom, students and staff engaged in a moving presentation about a variety of difficult topics in Canadian history including the Indian Residential Schools System and the systemic internment of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. After speaking about Canada’s past examples of intolerance, the presenter then spoke about current issues including cyber bullying and modern-day examples of intolerance.

Kim, who led the Tour for Humanity workshop, was impressed with how knowledgeable the Greenwood students were about Canada’s past and enjoyed watching them discuss how they would identify and combat intolerance in their daily lives. This workshop is an excellent addition to Greenwood’s current Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programming and we were very honoured to have it visit.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
