Get'Cha Head Onto the Stage

Basketball dribbling, singing, dancing, teenage drama and identity - our Junior Play adaptation of High School Musical has it all! Last week, our students performed the show on three consecutive nights from May 11 to 13. For many of the students involved with the play, this was their first experience performing in Greenwood’s theatre in front of a live audience. After many months of rehearsals and learning not only their lines but also their dance routines, the cast was ready and eager to perform.

High School Musical centres on a high school superstar basketball player and a gifted genius who both find their passion in singing. The two must brave peer pressure and go against social expectations to find their own identities. In this inspiring tale of breaking free from the confines of stereotypes, the cast sing and dance to several musical numbers.

Putting on these productions takes a lot of collaboration. Art classes were involved to create the set designs and the senior instrumental class performed as the live pit band. Ms. Borden, one of the co-directors of the show, says “Bringing a musical to life requires a whole community, and there were a number of staff members and nearly fifty students involved! Directing school productions is always a highlight of my year because it allows me to work creatively and collaboratively with so many dedicated students.”

The theatre had sold-out shows on Wednesday and Friday, with Thursday’s show sold at 88%. In addition to in-person theatre tickets, tickets to watch a live broadcast were also available on all three evenings. In total, 480 tickets were purchased for High School Musical. Congratulations to our cast and crew - a spectacular finish to months of hard work!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
