Greenwood Takes On SOMA XLIX

Mark Auger and Charles Jennings
A Greenwood delegation of 11 students, Mr. Jennings and Mr. Auger spent April 29 to May 2 debating and deliberating on topics of global importance in this year's Southern Ontario Model UN Assembly (SOMA) Conference. University of Toronto Schools hosted committees at the newly renovated UTS building and The Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy.

After a cancelled 2020 conference and a fully online conference in 2021, this year SOMA Model UN (MUN) ran concurrent in-person and online conferences. The return of SOMA MUN thrilled new and returning students and staff alike. It is an ongoing Greenwood tradition to participate in this premier MUN experience since Greenwood’s inception.

This year, Greenwood represented many committees and countries.

  • On the General Assembly:
    • Michael Baillie ‘24 (Cuba)
    • Clara Duffy ‘24 (Mexico)
    • Samantha Pearson ‘24 (Switzerland)
    • Genevieve Posehn ‘23 (Tanzania)
  • On the International Olympic Committee:
    • Lauren Baillie ‘24 (Switzerland)
  • On the Economic and Social Council:
    • Alexander Viola ‘25 (Liberia)
    • Luke Heintzman ‘23 (Tanzania)
  • On the Organization of American States:
    • Cate Scott ‘22 (Mexico)
    • Pippa Bridges ‘22 (Cuba)
  • On the UN Security Council:
    • Ella Davidson ‘23 (Mexico)
  • On the Meiji Court Crisis:
    • Angelica Posehn ‘23 (as Kumagaya Atsukatsu)

These students discussed issues like equitable access to vaccines, the build-up of the Chinese military and eradicating extreme poverty.

It was great to see new students so committed to the experience!

In addition to participating in the conference, the weekend also included an inspiring keynote by Eric Walsh from Global Affairs Canada, who was previously the ambassador to the Republic of Korea. He spoke of challenges for global peace in the current landscape of war and threats to democracy, while also shedding light on life and work in the foreign service.

All told, the weekend was a huge success!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
