Lessons in Humanity

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
During last week’s Holocaust Education Week, students expanded upon what they learned from listening to Greenwood’s guest speaker, Eva Meisel earlier this month. On Tuesday, November 15 and Thursday, November 17, the Tour for Humanity held sessions for Greenwood classes. This interactive and immersive mobile classroom gave the students an in-depth understanding of the Holocaust and its effects. The Tour for Humanity also showed how anti-Semitic behaviour manifests in the present day in various manners.

For Community Time on November 18, the focus was on building connections. Grade 7 and 8 students established connections between what they learned from Eva Meisel’s presentation and from the Tour for Humanity sessions.Grade 9 and 10 students built connections with the past and present with discussions regarding current events. Finally, for Grade 11 and 12 students looked for local community organizations that support the Jewish community. As the process of learning and empathizing is always ongoing, this work will continue in January 2023 for Holocaust Remembrance Day and throughout the year.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
