Let’s Go Robots! Bringing Science and Math Together

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
In a collaborative effort between the Grade 8 science and math teachers, Grade 8s at Greenwood get a fun introduction to programming and engineering their very own LEGO robots. These workshops allow the students to visualize and apply concepts taught in their science and math classes while preparing them for advanced applications in high school.

Ms. Maclean, Mr. Schmidt, Ms. Bowman and Ms. Della Mora designed these three-hour workshops to take advantage of LEGO’s Education SPIKE™️ app, which breaks down computer programming into easy-to-learn modules. In the first session, the students built their robots and learned how to operate the robots’ motors. A few Grade 12 students provided some guidance to the younger students during the session. The second session tasked the students with attaching a sensor to their robots and coding in a new behaviour when the sensor was triggered. For the final session on December 22, the students will put their newfound knowledge and their robots through a myriad of mini challenges.

These collaborative sessions help to expand the students’ understanding of each subject and give them opportunities to apply their learning through novel challenges.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
