Full Speed Towards Gold

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
It’s never a dull moment with Piper Grober ‘23 on the ice! Previously, Piper and Team Canada won gold at the 2022 IIHF’s U18 Women’s World Championships in June of 2022. With little time to rest after the 2022 Championships, Piper was selected to attend a Team Canada hockey camp in August where a selected team faced off in a three-game showcase series against the USA. The team won all three games against the USA. In late December, Team Canada sent their invitations to selected players from the camp to represent Canada at the 2023 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championships in Sweden. By December 31, Piper was on her way to Sweden to prepare  with the rest of Team Canada. The first tournament game began on January 8.

Team Canada had an undefeated tournament that led to a gold medal finish on January 15. In the final game, Piper netted a goal in the first period which brought Canada to 4-0. Team Canada would go on to win gold with a decisive 10-0 victory against Sweden. Overall, Piper scored two goals, had one assist and was a plus 5 throughout the competition. “It was such an honour to wear the maple leaf on the international stage and represent my country,” says Piper. “I had the most amazing experience with all the girls, coaches, and staff.”

But Piper’s not done with her hockey season just yet. Piper will also represent Team Ontario at the Canada Winter Games taking place in PEI in late February. Good luck, Piper!

Piper also looks forward to playing hockey at the collegiate level when she attends Cornell University in the fall.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
