Recognizing Lunar New Year, Student Leaders and House Standings

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
In a student-led assembly on January 23, Greenwood recognized the Lunar New Year and celebrated Student Leadership awards and a House reveal. First, the Asian Affinity Club acknowledged the Lunar New Year and how it is traditionally celebrated across Asia. The club also prepared a fun scavenger hunt for students to garner House points by locating red envelopes and paper rabbits (in honour of the Year of the Rabbit) hidden around the school.

Three students were nominated by the Greenwood community to receive a student leadership award. Ella Davidson ‘23, Evan Edgell ‘24 and Caymus Ruffalo ‘23 were recognized for their school involvement and leadership in the Greenwood community. While the awards this time were given to students in formal leadership positions, any student can be nominated for this award based on their school involvement and leadership.

Finally, the House assembly concluded with a full-school Heads or Tails game and House reveal. The House reps braved the potential for a splatter of a raw egg if their House happened to place lower in the rankings. Congratulations to House Nahanni for rising to first place with a narrow one-point margin above House Wernham. Will Nahanni maintain this momentum to the end of the year? Wait to find out at the next House reveal!

Students also got to enjoy the work of their peers in our Advertising Class who created many funny and creative video PSAs about appropriate school behaviour.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
