International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
A row of students stood facing their peers at the school assembly. Each of them stood for the memory of those who were killed during the Holocaust and why they will remember. For some, they remember for their family members who were killed during the Holocaust. For others, they remember to take a stand as an ally, knowing that inaction can lead to more harm.

Through keeping the memory of the millions of lives taken in the Holocaust alive, we all can work to stop this kind of hate from spreading today. With a growing number of modern antisemitic acts happening in the world, it is more important than ever to not forget the lessons of the past.

The UN General Assembly designated January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The entire school reflected on the meaning of this day at our assembly, as well as what they can do to combat antisemitism. As a community, we can spread love instead of hate.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
