A Record Turnout for DECA Provincials

Earlier this month, Greenwood participated in another year of DECA Provincials throughout the week of February 7 to 14. This year’s event included two days of in-person competition at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto on February 13 and 14. 

DECA is a worldwide business case competition that operates at the secondary school and undergraduate levels. This extracurricular tests students on their business knowledge through a combination of knowledge-based tests and in-person case-based role plays. Students compete individually or in pairs in categories of their choice ranging from Accounting Applications to Restaurant Management and Sports/Entertainment Marketing. 

DECA's Ontario Provincials were open only to the top performing students at DECA's Regionals events which took place earlier this year. For the third consecutive year, we nearly doubled our previous record for the number of students who qualified for Ontario Provincials, with 20 Greenwood students selected to compete. 

The DECA Club's success has hinged on an increasingly student-led model for its chapter. Top-performing students apply to become DECA Executives as part of Greenwood's student leadership program each spring. This year's panel of six Executives ran twice-a-week meetings beginning in early September to train Greenwood's 74 DECA members in Grades 9 to 12. Executives ran challenging case-based meetings and leveraged their own expertise to train our other members on how to effectively compete. Incidentally, all six DECA Executives qualified for this year's Provincials. 

Two special shout-outs go to Curtis Li '23 and Julia Morris '24. Curtis, one of Greenwood's DECA executives, was named Top 20 in Ontario for his role play performance in the Business Finance Series event. Meanwhile, Julia, who finished Top 20 in Ontario in her category last year and will soon begin her second year as the school's DECA Chapter President, became the first Greenwood student to participate in DECA Ontario's Leadership Development Academy (LDA) program. 

The Business teachers are tremendously proud of all DECA students this year. We congratulate those who competed at this month's event. We thank our amazing DECA Executive Team – Joseph Bailey '23, Sam Katz ‘23, Jamie Kaul ‘23, Curtis Li '23, James Lu '23 and Julia Morris '24 – for their dedication and leadership this year.
