Making Good Choices and Doing the Right Thing

Allan Hardy, Principal
Janelle Jones stopped at a drive-thru Burger King on her way home from work to pick up some food for dinner. Once home, she opened the bag of food and instead found $2600 in cash. By mistake, one of the Burger King employees gave Janelle that day’s bank deposit. After some deliberation with her husband, Janelle decided to return the money to Burger King, as keeping it was not in line with her religious beliefs.

I reminded students that this news story illustrates that more often than not, we know how to make the right choice; the hard part is making the right choice. As we head into the final term, it is inevitable that students will be faced with a range of moral dilemmas both in and out of school. My hope is that they will make positive choices.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
