Dear Greenwood Community,

When I arrived at Greenwood more than 20 years ago, I was looking for a place where teachers knew students as individuals, where outdoor education mattered, and where learning felt alive. I found all of that. And two decades later, those values haven’t changed. But the world has.

The questions our students will face - about purpose, resilience, belonging, and what success actually means - are more urgent than ever. They’re questioning whether the old formula still works. And they’re right to question it. That’s why we’ve spent the last year listening. To current parents who trust us with their children’s futures. To prospective families wondering if there’s a different way to think about education. To our incredible staff who live this philosophy every day. To alumni who’ve carried Greenwood’s approach into the wider world. And to students themselves - the ones who know, instinctively, that one-size-fits-all doesn’t work.

 

What we heard was clear: Greenwood matters because we’ve always believed that success isn’t a formula. It’s personal. It’s discovered. It’s a journey. While other schools embrace a rigid version of success, we’re proud and committed to what we see as a different approach to education and a different way of supporting our students’ growth. We call it “A Different School of Thought”.

Our strategic plan for the next decade is built on strengthening and scaling this difference. Embracing what makes us who we are with more conviction than ever. We’re committing to deepening personalized learning so that every student discovers their own definition of success - one that aligns with their strengths, passions, and potential. We’re investing in our staff because great teachers are the heartbeat of a great education. We’re expanding our outdoor and experiential learning because some of the most important things students learn can’t happen in a classroom. We’re building community infrastructure - both physical and cultural - so that belonging isn’t an accident; it’s by design. And we’re preparing our students for a future that doesn’t yet exist, by teaching them to think independently, adapt creatively, and lead with both head and heart.

I often say there really is nothing like Greenwood, and there’s nothing like a Greenwood student. And it’s true. It’s because we’ve built systems and structures around a coherent philosophy: that education should help students discover who they are and what they’re capable of becoming. Not who we think they should be, but who they actually are. And if that makes us different, we’ll take it. I can’t wait to build this next Greenwood chapter together with you.
