Ways of Giving

The impact of gifts at Greenwood is reflected in the happy smiles, stories and success of our students. Give the gift of knowledge and opportunity, as others have since 2002.
Greenwood is so grateful to its donor community of parents/guardians, alumni, staff, grandfriends and others who support the school. As an independent school and registered charity, Greenwood relies on philanthropic donations as an important source of financial support to enable our students to venture further together.

There are many ways for you to make your gift to Greenwood. THANK YOU!

Annual and Leadership Giving

Each year, parents/guardians, alumni, staff and friends are asked to  support Greenwood’s annual giving program. Every gift makes a difference.

We were founded on philanthropy and we’re carrying on the tradition. A legacy of our founding families and others over the last 22 years is our Annual Giving Program. Each year, parents and guardians, staff and alumni are asked to consider a gift to Greenwood to support a number of key priority areas.

Annual donations can be directed to:

  • The Greenwood Fund (Support the school’s highest priorities)
  • Inclusion, Belonging and Pluralism Initiatives (Pluralism means recognizing and valuing differences such as identity, beliefs or politics. Everyone belongs.)
  • Health & Well-being (Create opportunities around health and well-being; exercises, presentations and workshops, reflective practices, physical and activity breaks, mindfulness and mental health awareness)
  • Financial Assistance (Ensure students can come to and stay at Greenwood)
  • General Endowment (Support the future sustainability of Greenwood)
  • Leaving Class ‘25 (Honouring the 2025 leaving class)

Leadership Annual Gifts
Our Greenwood Circle recognizes the support of our leadership annual donors. With a leadership annual gift of $2,000 and more, you will be recognized as a member of the Greenwood Circle  (link to Recognizing our Donors) in our fiscal year (July 1 to June 30). We are so grateful for our annual leadership donors whose support enables the school to do more each year.

NEW!! We are excited to be launching new recognition this year for our loyal donors (Loyalty Circle) and our alumni and staff donors (Grizzly Circle).

Donations help the school to accomplish its mission and deliver on the strategic priorities for our students, and the impact is significant.
Most annual donors at Greenwood support The Greenwood Fund, our highest priorities fund, which enables our Principal to fund innovations and projects not covered by the operating budget and importantly, to support emerging projects that may arise through the year. Here are just a few examples of what past donations to The Greenwood Fund have enabled:
  • Athletics equipment
  • Teams - debate, DECA, etc.
  • Pluralism and DEI training, workshops, seminars and speakers
  • Health and well-being programs
  • 3D printer, smartboards, innovative classroom technology
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Arts, theatre, music enrichment
  • Scoreboard at the local arena where our teams play (Leaside Arena)
  • Library books, newspapers and digital subscriptions
  • Bussing for service learning and athletic competitions, games, races
  • And more!

Major Gifts

Greenwood is so grateful to the many founding families and others in our community who have chosen to make wonderful major gifts that have helped to transform our school from an idea to the incredible place it is today for our students.

Major gifts are often directed to special capital projects or create endowment funds (link to Capital, Endowment & Special Projects page), are often pledged over multiple years, and always significantly advance our strategic priorities. Gifts of $50,000 and above are considered major gifts. We currently are raising capital support for our new Greenspace, and endowments for financial assistance,  long-term curriculum, campus and program sustainability.

We are inspired by the generosity of our major donors and are delighted to recognize their support in various places throughout the school and on our Wernham-West Wall.

Planned / Legacy Gift

Leaving a legacy is a beautiful way of supporting the next generation, honouring one’s connection to a special place and/or people, thanking those who have come before and who will follow in the future. There can be a great joy taken knowing that your future support will make a difference to a place you care deeply about for years into the future.

A planned or legacy gift at Greenwood is a donation to Greenwood College School Foundation, arranged in the present to be made available for use in the future. Legacy gifts normally pass through your estate, and can help offset taxes.

Where does my legacy gift go?
All legacy gifts honour individual and family memories and connections and live on in perpetuity. All legacy gifts will be retained within the Greenwood College School Foundation and, unless otherwise specified, will be added to the school’s endowment, with your philanthropic wishes and capital preservation as first priorities.

How do I make a bequest to Greenwood College School?
With the help of a lawyer and/or estate planner, you can easily add a bequest to your existing will. If you wish, Greenwood College School’s Advancement team can assist with the wording. You can choose to give a specific dollar amount, or a percentage of your estate. If you're not sure of your future circumstances, you can set up a contingency bequest, thereby ensuring that your spouse and/or family are provided for first. If you don't have a will, you may want to consider establishing one.
Donors who choose to include Greenwood in their estate plans will be recognized with membership in the Forever Green Circle. We are delighted to know of your intentions as early as you make them so that we can honour, recognize and celebrate your wonderful future support now.

Leaving Class Gifts

Each year, a permanent endowment fund in honour of the leaving class is established, and families of the leaving class make a collective donation to honour their time at Greenwood and celebrate the positive impacts the school has made on their lives. Funds raised are invested in the school’s endowment to leave behind a valuable and impactful legacy for future students.

Some class funds support Outdoor Education experiences for our students, and others support the Student Success Centre and the Greenwood Centre for Teaching and Learning. Many class funds support financial assistance at Greenwood, ensuring access for others to the incredible education our children have received at the school.

These endowed funds for financial assistance will collectively enhance access to the Greenwood experience for future students and reflect on the success of all Greenwood graduates. It is a special way for all of us to support ongoing student success through Greenwood’s financial assistance initiatives.

As our endowments grow from our support now and over the years, it will continue to have an impact - one that your family and ours can feel proud of.

An endowment is a gift in perpetuity - a gift that lasts and grows - forever.
An endowment is a fund that holds investments as a source of income - forever.
Greenwood’s endowment supports many areas in the School - forever.

The school’s endowment funds are overseen and managed by the Greenwood College School Foundation, with the goal to ensure the sustainability of the school for the long-term. Only the interest is spent each year from endowments, with the capital protected to continue growing.

Alumni Class & Reunion Gifts

Alumni contributions help support the continuation of opportunities they experienced at Greenwood to be available to current and future students. Gifts of all sizes are meaningful and make a positive impact on the student experience at Greenwood.

Greenwood’s annual 5-, 10-, 15-Year Alumni Reunion is a time for peers to reconnect and celebrate a milestone. Many alumni choose to honour special reunion years by making a donation to their Class Fund. Class funds are managed by the Greenwood College School Foundation and contribute to supporting a variety of areas including: student financial assistance, Student Success Centre (SSC), experiential learning programs, and Greenwood Centre for Teaching and Learning.

Alumni gifts to Greenwood help ensure the excellence you experienced as a student continues into the future. Alumni support truly does make a difference!

When you were a student, many alumni and families supported your experience. Please consider carrying on this important giving tradition.

NEW this year is our Grizzly Circle recognizing our alumni and staff donors who make leadership annual gifts of $250 and more in our fiscal year (July 1 to June 30). THANK YOU for your support!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
