Greenwood Hosts GTA's First Google Summit

Kate Raven
Presented by EdTechTeam, the summit was a high intensity two-day event that focused on using Google Apps for Education and other Google Tools to promote student learning. Sessions highlighted keynote presenters from all over North America, as well as local inspirational speakers.

Participants included public and independent K-12 educators from as far away as Manitoulin Island, Ottawa, Kingston and Montreal. Twenty-seven Greenwood staff members were among the attendees, ready to learn how to integrate more Google tools into the school's personalized approach to education.

Day 1 kicked off with a keynote address from Holly Clark, an educational strategist with EdTechTeam. Holly's presentation, titled Disrupt Education, examined the impact of "digital disruption" in education and looked at teacher and student empowerment through digital tools.

Attendees then headed to their first of eight sessions for the weekend. Sessions focused on ways to engage students in their own learning, and to have students ask questions about their learning rather than always answer questions from the teacher. Sessions also discussed how technology could be used to better track learning, check for understanding and engage students in ways that were not previously possible.

Among the presenters was Leslie McBeth, Greenwood's Subject Team Leader for Social Studies. Leslie's sessions focused on two different tools teachers can use to facilitate real-world, student-driven learning. (Follow the links for descriptions of her presentations on docAppender and Hangouts.)

Particpants also heard from two other keynote speakers throughout the weekend:
  • Rushton Hurley, Executive Director of Next Vista for Learning, delivered a presentation focusing on the question "How do we get students to move from doing what's asked to asking more of themselves?
  • Julie Millan, Instructional Leader: Teaching & Learning with Technology for the TDSB, asked attendees to consider how what they learned over the weekend can be used to engage students and impact learning in their schools and classrooms.
In between sessions, participants networked, enjoyed refreshments and visited our conference photo booth.

Our sincere thanks to the EdTechTeam for a wonderful weekend, and to everyone who attended! Check out the attached album to see photos from the weekend.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
