Greenwood Goes to India: Summer 2017

Hannah Goodman
On August 3, a group of Grade 11 students will travel to the small village of Chettipalayam in Tamil Nadu, India. They will volunteer at Global Pathways School (GPS) for two weeks, where they will help support the teachers in their classroom.

GPS was started by retired teachers from The York School on June 1, 2009. The school is located in a settlement for families who were displaced from their homes in a nearby city. They live in 10x10 cinderblock houses with no running water or electricity. Being of the lowest caste in India, they would not normally have the opportunity to go to school or learn English. Hopefully, through the education they are receiving at GPS, they will be able to write the postsecondary entrance exams and continue their studies. This will help to break the cycle of poverty in their community.

Mr. Farbstein and Ms. Lieberman will accompany the Grade 11 students on this journey. This group has been meeting weekly to learn about Indian culture, climate, language and local traditions. Many meetings have focused on planning for fundraising. What is needed for the trip this year is the following:
  • Children’s clothes, ages 3-10
  • Books for early teens (Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Judy Bloom)
  • Whiteboard markers, pens and other school supplies
During the week of May 8, we will run a school drive to collect these items through a grade competition. On May 11, we will host “India Day” as a fundraiser. For a suggested donation of $5, students can dress down on this day; our hope is that this will help us raise the $1600 we need to build a bike shed for GPS students. Please look for more information in Week @ A Glance closer to the date.

If you would like to donate, please contact Mr. Farbstein or Ms. Lieberman directly.

Thanks in advance for your support!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
