First Impressions: The Art of the On-Camera Audition

On-camera auditions are not as easy as they look; actors have to introduce themselves with confidence, know their marks, understand their relationship to their reading partner and avoid looking at the camera to make a good impression. During the week of March 27, our Grade 10 drama class learned the fundamentals of a great on-camera audition from industry pros at Armstrong Acting Studios.

Prior to the week-long workshop, all students had just 48 hours to memorize a scene which would form the foundation of their first on-camera audition. Here’s how the week progressed from there:
  • Monday: Studio director Dean Armstrongtook students through the basics of on-camera audition technique. Then, each student was given the opportunity to do a real audition. Following the auditions, students received general notes on the fundamentals of audition prep and what is required of a successful actor.
  • Tuesday: Students performed a “callback” audition for their first scene, with students observing their peers’’ performances. Afterwards, students reflected on how this audition was different from their first audition and received specific notes on their performance. They were then assigned a second scene to have fully memorized for the next day.
  • Wednesday: Students performed their second scene as an official audition. Afterwards, specific notes were given on their takes and their ability to effectively take direction and implement it into their auditions.
  • Friday: Students chose scene one or scene two to showcase as an official audition for Dean Armstrong and a casting director. In the afternoon, the group received an overview of industry realities from Dean and had the opportunity to hear from a panel of young working actors, who discussed the training required to get into acting and what students should expect from the journey.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
