Peer Mentoring Builds Cross-Grade Relationships

The peer mentoring program, which was originally founded in 2010, restarted in Greenwood’s new space last October. The program was initially established to act as a means for younger students to get help with organisational skills, study tips, and homework help from experienced, older students. However, the program has since developed into something much more far-reaching; instead of being merely a mentor, older students have taken on the role of being a friend in an older grade to their buddy.

Meeting every Friday from October until May, mentors and mentees have the opportunity to get to know each other on a personal level. Through the time spent together, mentors are able to determine how their buddy works and studies most effectively and are able to guide them through the school year and final evaluation process. Additionally, Grade 8 students are offered helpful and practical advice regarding the often challenging transition to high school from a peer mentor who, just a few years prior, went through the same experience.

Younger students are able to come to their older buddy with concerns they may have about schoolwork, time management, or other school-related activities. The unique connection that is formed between peer mentors and their younger buddies over the course of the academic year is one that will most definitely last past the end of the school year.

At a typical Friday meeting, everything from French homework to emailing teachers to studying tips is reviewed and taken care of. Not only do younger students receive practical advice about how to manage schoolwork and stay organised, but older students take away imperative, hands-on leadership skills, positively impacting both mentor and mentee for years to come.
