Prior to the trip, the students organized India Day, a fundraising event that took place May 11. Their efforts gained them enough – just under $2500 – to build a bike shed for the school.
The fundraiser took place in the Lodge, which was transformed into a mini Festival of India for students and staff. Indian music flooded the Lodge in the morning to give students just a taste of what was in store for midday. By lunch, their mouths watered as the cafe staff cooked up a storm of butter chicken and basmati rice, while their eyes feasted on a classic Bollywood film. Students and staff also had the opportunity to decorate themselves with beautiful henna designs.
The group raised funds by suggesting a donation of $5 to enable students to dress down for the day, and surpassed their fundraising target. Each participant received a brightly coloured bracelet for the donation. They also collected donations of school supplies throughout the week, and have more than enough to take with them for Global Pathways students.
Good job Grade 11s! Your work will make a huge impact in India!
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
