Greenwood’s Debate Club Earns a Place in the Fulford League
Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
Greenwood is now a member of the Fulford League!
Four Greenwood students, ranging from Grade 9 - 12, attended their third Fulford League debate competition on April 21.
Students debated on two topics: first, whether Aung San Suu Kyi's honorary Canadian citizenship should be revoked due to her lack of response to current human rights abuses in Myanmar; and second, if women are being equitably represented as both heroes and villains in movies.
They were partnered up with students from other schools, and worked collaboratively to put together their arguments. It was a great opportunity to learn from other students outside the debate club at Greenwood.
In order to be invited to join the league, Greenwood needed to send a junior and senior team to three Fulford debates over the course of the school year. As part of the League, Greenwood’s debate club will have more opportunity to make connections with students from other independent schools in Ontario, and to continue developing their debating skills in a competitive environment.
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
