Poetry Month

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
April is Poetry Month!

To celebrate the poet in each of us, we ran some poetry-themed events in the Learning Commons. We had a special display with some poetry reading suggestions, and teachers ran limerick and haiku challenges in class. There was a magnetic whiteboard where passersby could arrange word magnets to create their own quick poems.

The big event was “Poem In Your Pocket” day. On April 17, students carried poems in their pockets. At any time, an English teacher could ask them for their poem; if they recited it, they received house points, and their poem got added to Greenwood’s Poet-tree. Approximately 150 students brought in poems; half of these were original compositions!

We certainly enjoyed the chance to add some artistic expression to our days throughout the month!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
