Jess Tinney (‘18) Sweeps the CPISRA, Winning 6 Medals

Recent alumna Jess Tinney made her fellow Grizzlies proud this summer, as she competed in the CPISRA World Games. Jessica, who has set multiple OFSAA records in track and won numerous medals for Greenwood in her time as a Grizzly, came home from the CPISRA World Games with an incredible six of Canada's 38 medals! Competing in swimming and track events, Jessica won two golds, three silvers and one bronze.
Three of those medals were in wheelchair racing events, a sport that she was first introduced to at Greenwood. She wasn’t even aware of wheelchair racing until Ms. Joannou asked her if she wanted to join Greenwood’s track team. “I went to a couple of practices and a competition, and I fell in love with the sport,” Jess said.
Jess credits Greenwood with helping her to enter the track world. “My experience on the track team was a very positive one,” she says. “Without the support of the coaches, I would have never figured out how to turn in a wheelchair or been able to accomplish everything I have.”
Jess has her mind set on one day representing Canada at the Paralympic Games; she’s ready to put in the hard work to get there and to reap the rewards. “I get a feeling of freedom when I’m competing,” Jess says. “I control how my races go, and I get to push myself in every single race. No one else can do that for me.”
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
