Preparing for the Year 3000

Claire Dixon (‘21)
The Grade 10/11 Green Industries class visited Design Exchange, a museum and learning centre that examines creativity and design across various disciplines including architecture, product design, and technology. Green Industries student Claire Dixon (‘21) wrote about the experience.

For the Green Industries Grade 10/11 class, we went on a field trip to Design Exchange. We learned more about landscaping and architecture, which are concepts we will be learning about later on in the year.

We were split up into groups where we were all given the same challenge: it is the year 3000 and all life is gone except for us. We had to design and make a model of a building that would allow day-to-day things like education and sports to continue. On top of that we had to use the concepts we had learned earlier that day about the actual physical structure of our models and how they would work in the year 3000.

After building and presenting our models to the group, we took a tour of some of the museum’s sculptures and pieces. We looked at objects we use daily, like chairs and music players, and how they evolved over time based on people's needs. After the day of building and touring, we all had a great idea as to how some of our units are going to look later on in the year.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
