Mixing It Up with Chef a l’ecole
On Tuesday, December 4 Ms. Borden and Ms. Kabakian’s classes joined forces to make the ultimate desert… molten lava cakes! This was such a cool unit overall and the fact that we got to actually make something was really fun. Who else gets to make cakes in French class?
For about three weeks before the chefs came, Ms. Borden and Ms. Kabakian got us super prepared in a bunch of cool ways. They gave us matching games, Kahoot quizzes and fun worksheets to help us remember the vocabulary. Finally, after weeks of waiting, Chef a l’ecole came. Everybody was very excited for the chefs to be here and especially about getting to eat the food in the end.
The chefs split everyone into to groups of five. Then, they gave each group a number in français. The chefs called up numero un first, and they got to put butter and chocolate chips in a double boiler to melt it. The instructions were all in French, so we really had to pay attention to what the chefs were telling us to do. Then they gave us two spoons with a jenga block in between, wrapped in duct tape. So while people were taking turns mixing the melted chocolate together, other people would play the spoons with Acadian music in the background. We also added evaporated milk to the chocolate.
Next, numero deux was up to bat. They had to crack an egg and separate the yolk from the white, and then they had to crack two more normally. Then they put on the music again, while everyone took turns whisking the eggs. We had to whisk the eggs until they were a light yellow colour. It was like a mini competition between the groups.
Then the next number came up, and they put the flour, cocoa, and salt into a container for the next person to sift into the rest of the mix. Next, we all took turns mixing it again. The cakes were almost ready, and all we had left to do was pour the mix into nine silicone moulds. While they were baking, one of the chefs old us an old Acadian story.
It was an amazing experience, and we are so happy that we could be a part of it.
